Azerbaijan has opted out of a natural gas supply agreement with Turkmenistan as authorities in Baku appear increasingly unhappy with the slow pace of building energy ties between the two countries.

The halt of gas supplies has been confirmed by Iran, which played a pivotal role in the agreement by acting as a “swap agent” for the two countries, accepting pipeline gas supplies from Turkmenistan and sending a similar volume of gas to Azerbaijan.
