Hungary hosted major talks this weekend as the nation steps up efforts to establish itself as a regional gas hub.

The Hungarian government is weighing its options in a bid to strengthen energy security for Hungary and its Central European neighbours, which were historically dependent on Russian gas.

And with Ukraine signalling that it will not renew its role as a transit route for Russian gas to Europe, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban took the opportunity to hold a natural gas sourcing summit with leaders of former Soviet Republics Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, as well as Turkey and Serbia.
